BRC
/ I o P GLOBAL STANDARD FOOD
& OTHER PACKAGING MATERIALS
Introduction
UK Retailers and their suppliers of retail branded products are
now required to take ‘all reasonable precautions and exercise
all due diligence’ in the development, manufacture, distribution,
advertising or sale of food products to the consumer.
Suppliers
of packaging to U.K. retailers or suppliers of packaging to food
manufacturers who are themselves providing retail branded products
are now obliged to put in place appropriate systems and controls
to ensure their packaging is suitable for safe food use.
In
2001 the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and the Institute of Packaging
(I o P) developed the technical standard and protocol for companies
manufacturing and supplying food packaging materials for retailer
branded products in order to ensure retailers and food manufacturers
fulfilled their legal obligations.
The
standard was primarily introduced to protect the consumer by providing
a common basis for the evaluation of companies supplying food product
packaging to retailers.
Since
its introduction the standard has become the benchmark by which
companies supplying packaging are measured.
The
key requirements of the BRC / I o P standard are :-
The
adoption of a formal Hazard Analysis System
A
documented Technical Management System that shall include all the
quality and hygine systems used throughout the organisations site(s)
The
control of factory standards, products, processes and personnel.
Crown
Management has extensive experience in helping companies achieve
Certification to the BRC /I o P standard.
